At the front entrance and in the playground of Te Kura o Cobden School, two symbols stand as powerful reminders of who we are, where we belong, and the journey we share together.
Nestled in the garden at our entrance is the pounamu touchstone, representing strength, connection, and enduring relationships. Like pounamu, we believe the qualities that matter most - kindness, courage, perseverance, and respect - are shaped over time through shared experiences, learning, and service to others. The pounamu invites our tamariki to pause, reflect, and remember that they are part of something bigger than themselves.
In the playground, our waka reminds us that every member of our school community - ākonga, whānau, staff, and visitors - is travelling together with a shared purpose. The carved manaia represent protection and guidance, while the taurapa (stern) and tau ihu (bow) symbolise strength, direction, and resilience as we navigate both opportunities and challenges. Surrounded by native plants, harakeke, and our hauora garden, the waka reflects our commitment to caring for one another, our environment, and the unique place we call home.

Together, the waka and pounamu reflect our partnership with Ngāti Waewae, mana whenua of southern Te Tai Poutini. They help bring local stories, culture, and identity to life, reminding us that learning is deeply connected to people, place, and whakapapa. These are more than features of our school grounds—they are daily reminders of our values of Manaakitanga (We Care), Mahi Ngātahi (We Cooperate), and Kōrero Mai (We Communicate), and of our commitment to growing confident learners who know where they come from, value where they are, and are ready for the journey ahead.

The mural you see in our grounds and featured at the top of our website was designed using ideas gathered from our students, reflecting the animals, birds, insects, and natural environment they see and value in Te Tai Poutini, creating a vibrant artwork that celebrates their connection to the local whenua and the unique place they call home.
