Established in 1885, Te Kura o Cobden School has been at the heart of the Cobden community for generations. Situated on the northern side of the Grey River / Māwhera in Greymouth, our school has a long tradition of providing quality education while maintaining strong connections with the people, places, and stories that make Te Tai Poutini unique.
As a community school, we value the rich history of our region and recognise that learning is strengthened when children develop a deep understanding of where they come from. Our localised curriculum draws on the landscapes, history, culture, and environment of the West Coast, helping learners build a strong sense of identity, belonging, and pride in their community.
We are proud to work in partnership with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae, the mana whenua of southern Te Tai Poutini. Together, we are embedding local histories, pūrākau, te reo Māori, and tikanga into everyday learning so that our tamariki develop an authentic understanding of the people and places that shape our region. This partnership enriches learning for all students, strengthens connections to place and identity, and reflects our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Today, Cobden School continues to honour its heritage while preparing learners for the future—providing a caring, inclusive environment where every child is encouraged to learn, grow, and contribute with confidence.
