About the School and Community

Cobden School is situated on the West Coast of Te Waipounamu, nestled between the Grey River/Māwhera and the Tasman Sea, with the Twelve Apostles hills providing a striking backdrop. The school serves the Cobden community and surrounding areas, offering education for tamariki from Years 1–8. Following their primary education, most students transition to either Greymouth High School or John Paul II High School.

The school hosts an on-site playgroup in partnership with WestREAP, supporting early learning and strengthening connections with whānau before children begin school.

Cobden School provides a wide range of sporting, cultural, leadership, and learning opportunities. Students participate in activities such as swimming, soccer, rugby league, hockey, basketball, miniball, kapa haka, performing arts, leadership programmes, and environmental initiatives. The school also offers after-school music lessons for students from across the Greymouth area.

Like many schools, Cobden School works alongside a range of agencies to support the well-being, engagement, and success of tamariki and their whānau. These partnerships include Learning Support, Resource Teachers: Learning and Behaviour (RTLB), Public Health Nursing services, Oranga Tamariki, Family Start, Strengthening Families, and other community-based agencies. The school is committed to ensuring students and families receive the support they need to thrive.

Strong partnerships with whānau are highly valued. Cobden School actively encourages family involvement in learning and school life and maintains regular communication through its website, Facebook page, TikTok, YouTube channel, Skool Loop app, and other digital platforms, celebrating student learning and achievements with the wider community.

The school has developed a localised curriculum that reflects the unique history, environment, and aspirations of the Cobden community. This includes a strong focus on local pūrākau, te reo Māori, environmental education, and meaningful learning experiences connected to place. The curriculum is supported by a graduate profile and assessment and reporting procedures aligned with The New Zealand Curriculum.

Student well-being is at the heart of school life. Cobden School uses Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) and Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) approaches to foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful learning environment. Student progress and well-being are carefully monitored, enabling targeted support and personalised learning programmes for those requiring additional assistance. Special Education Grant (SEG) funding supports a range of learning and wellbeing initiatives, including the employment and professional development of teacher aides.

Cobden School is well-resourced and continues to invest in high-quality learning environments. All permanent classrooms are centrally heated, and significant upgrades have been completed across the school, including refurbished classrooms, improved accessibility, enhanced wireless infrastructure, and a modernised hall featuring upgraded heating, lighting, wheelchair access, and toilet facilities. The school is also constructing a dedicated technology and food technology space to further enhance learning opportunities.

The school features a refurbished covered swimming pool, allowing students to participate in swimming programmes throughout Terms 1 and 4. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Cobden School participates in a decarbonisation programme and has installed a modern pellet boiler to reduce its environmental footprint.
